The “Cathedral Underpass” is a major urban infrastructure project designed for the very heart of Prishtina, positioned along one of the city’s busiest and most strategic traffic arteries. Its primary purpose is to channel vehicular traffic underground, thus relieving surface-level congestion and transforming the area above into an expanded public square. By separating car traffic from pedestrian flows, the project significantly enhances road safety, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists, while also improving the overall efficiency of urban mobility. Beyond addressing traffic challenges, the underpass represents an important step in reshaping the urban fabric of Prishtina. It physically and functionally reconnects the central square with the old town and nearby neighborhoods, strengthening social and economic ties across the city. The creation of accessible, flexible, and people-oriented public spaces above the structure adds value not only to daily life in the city but also to its cultural and touristic appeal. From a strategic perspective, the Cathedral Underpass is aligned with Prishtina’s broader Mobility Plan, which prioritizes sustainable transport solutions. It supports the development of integrated public transport networks, reduces travel times, and facilitates multimodal connections such as “Park and Ride.” In this sense, the project is not just an infrastructural intervention, but also an investment in the city’s long-term economic growth, environmental sustainability, and urban identity.
